Kate Golebiowska is a Polish-born immigrant living in Australia. She moved to Canberra, Australia's capital, in the early 2000s, when she was in her mid-20s, to pursue her PhD in public policy at the Australian National University. She has lived in the Antipodes since that time. Just before receiving her degree, she relocated from Canberra to Darwin, a city in the Australian tropics, where she has worked as an International Migration Researcher and Lecturer at Charles Darwin University. In this episode, we speak with Kate while she is at Emory University in Atlanta on her Fulbright Professional Award (Business/industry). Through her lens we learn about what it was like growing up as a young person in Poland in the 1990s, when the country was undergoing a dramatic transformation from a country being communist and centrally-managed to a market-based economy. We also discussed her aspirations as a young person to experience life abroad and her infectious enthusiasm for learning and making use of foreign languages. Kate also discussed her research of migrant women and micro-enterprises.
